boca raton, fl : [2019]

The design for Bento Boca Raton features a series of parallel wood baffles that take inspiration from the geometric pattern and rhythmic repetition of Japanese roof tiles. Balancing gravitas and lightness, the repetition of the simply routed profile creates a dynamic spatial volume. Dramatic uplighting mounted on tensile steel ribbons accentuates the volumetric quality of the ceiling design. Counters and millwork rendered in gloss red recall the bright crimson color of Japanese laquerware that is typical of traditional Bento service-ware. A dimensional oak panel wall adds additional textural interest while echoing the material and geometric logic of the ceiling. Light fixtures are a modern interpretation that hint at the familiar, archetypal paper lantern.
