haan coffee

Haan Coffee is a local start-up owned and operated by a group of individuals who are as passionate about coffee as they are about the farmers and communities who contribute to their business. In the same spirit, we imagined a space that would have a positive impact on the immediate neighborhood and community by fostering a variety of intersections and interactions between people. This shop could be much more than a space to enjoy coffee. It could also be an art gallery, a library, a retail boutique, a garden, and a neighborhood meeting place.

The layout of the space is fluid. Rather than distinct rooms connected by definitive pathways or corridors, the rooms and corridors in our plan are seamless and blend into a continuous spatial narrative. These spatial overlaps provide the framework for the overlapping of programmatic functions: an entry garden that is flanked by a gallery wall or a reading nook carved from a built-in shelving display. These overlaps result in newfound opportunities to experience and occupy the space. The resulting winding promenade from the entry point to the coffee counter forges moments of anticipation and discovery. As one turns the corner, more is revealed.

Taking motifs and cues from the owners' cultural heritage, we developed an interior palette that is a soft nod to Korean traditions and sensibilities. Wood and stone are prevalent in Korea's traditional architecture. The materials support each other with their opposing yet complementing properties and satisfy practical and aesthetic purposes— soft and firm, warm and cold, and organic and inorganic. Both rough and refined versions of these respective materials are used throughout the space to establish an underlying design logic. Paired with an understated simplicity and geometric logic, the space exhibits a quiet inner harmony that promotes calm, contemplative reflection.

Paralleling the brand’s mission to deliver the best craft coffee, we wanted the space to feel detailed, well-crafted, and entirely intentional. Walls and shelving are adorned with carefully curated artwork and porcelainware objects. We collaborated closely with Korean-American artist Suzie Shin to develop a series of bold polychromatic prints and textural tapestries which adorn the walls at Haan Coffee. Her artwork is also featured on the branding and packaged goods offered at the store. In a minimal interior such as this, we fully embraced the power of art to breathe life and sincerity into the space. These details also serve to extend a heartfelt sense of hospitality.
