maki hibachi

Maki’s look fuses mid-century contemporary design with an opulent Meiji period aesthetic; an era that symbolizes the beginnings of modernization in Japan at a point when eastern and western principles met. The historic synthesis of cultural heritage and styles is echoed throughout our interpretation of the interior.

The interiors are in a Kintsugi palette of pale greens, earthy browns, indigo, and gold. These natural tones are evocative of traditional Japanese textiles and ceramics. Upholstery featuring stylized clouds and gilded Chiyogami wallpaper with cranes echo this narrative. Light fixtures in gold appear as precious objects dotted throughout the space importing a warm inviting glow. The central dining space is capped by a series of crisscrossing chandeliers that add a sculptural touch to the space while subtlely referencing the form of Japanese calligraphic brushes.

The dining room is flanked by a Hibachi and Sushi counter where the theatricality of the chefs takes center stage. A wall rendered in a subtlely textured Shikkui plaster is suspended above this area as serves as an understated proscenium that focuses one’s view of the chefs. A black granite whose color and movement reminded us of swirling Sumi ink was chosen for a dining surface that sits along the chef’s counter.

Maki is an elevated dining experience immersed in the narrative, materials, and aesthetic flair inspired by traditional Japanese arts and crafts merged seamlessly with western influences.
