If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in water. - Loren Eiseley

The location of this store sits adjacent to the Riverside district of Jacksonville. An eponym for its proximity to the St. John’s River, this area has become home to a host of trendy eateries and eclectic shops. Arguably, water has been a primary force in molding Jacksonville's growth and development both historically and in the present. Whether for industry, transportation, resources or recreation, the people of this area have a particular affinity for this natural element.

Water became the driving inspiration behind this store for Bento. The design of the ceiling takes a cue from the sculptural forms of kidney-shaped swimming pools that became an icon of popular Americana in the 1950s and 1960s. A barrel vault ceiling realized in an electrifying blue plaster finish conjures the fluidity and coolness of water. Light glimmers off its textured surface like sunlight off of a crystalline body of water. Small mosaic glass tiles in complimenting shades of blue and white are a direct material reference to the institution of the swimming hole. Redolent of the concrete shells used in pool construction, the floors of the space are realized in soft gray concrete. A slatted ceiling of wood recalls the planked timber used in patio decking and poolside accessories. Furniture and geometric paneling in blond wood tones soften the interior while keeping the mood light and bright.

A spatial and material reimagining of the symbolism of the swimming pool, Bento Riverside Jacksonville speaks evocatively to the indulgence of sun-drenched Florida days spent in pursuit of nothing at all.
